This pic shows the profile of the gutter with the wing on. The wing is shown on the top right hand corner of the pic. It is intended to lay on top of the sheeting of the roof to keep water from getting behind the gutter. This is the primary method of installation and is normally used for comp shingle roofs and stripped/new construction scenarios.
This pic shows the profile of the gutter without the wing. The back of the gutter is vertical up to the very top. This gutter profile is often used for installation under flashing/edge metal, metal roofs, and tile roofs.
Installing the gutter without a wing can also be used to pitch the gutter towards the downspout in order to maximize functionality. Flashing/edge metal is often required in this scenario in order to avoid water going behind the gutter.
